How did you get into baking?

Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was to be in the kitchen with my mom. Whether we were making brownies, holiday cookies, or a trifle, I wanted to be a part of it! After I graduated from college and moved into my own apartment in New York, I re-discovered my love of baking and began brainstorming new recipes and ideas to make myself.

What do you love most about the baking process?

I love baking because of the creativity that it allows. For example, once you have a basic recipe for a cake down, you can easily modify the flavors and ingredients to make new desserts. I also love the community around baking and how it brings people together – I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a good dessert.

What inspired you to start a blog?

As I started getting more into baking and cooking, I wanted an outlet to share what I was doing. My blog is a place for me to share new ideas and pushes me to become a better baker!

What recipe are you most proud of?

For my mom’s most recent birthday I made her this Vanilla Almond Cake with Blackberry Cream Frosting. It was my first cake with multiple layers and I love how it turned out! The almond paste that I used in the cake was so delicious and I’m determined to use it again in another recipe.

Do you have a favorite ingredient that you like to use?

I love using fresh fruit in desserts. I’ll go to my local farmers market and look for whatever is in season and think of ways I can incorporate it into something new.

What’s an ingredient that you’ve never used, but would like to try?

I’ve seen lots of desserts lately using miso, which I have not tried but would love to!

Are there any lesser known brands or products that you enjoy using?

For props, I love looking at Whisk NYC, and Decorum UK. They have beautiful baking materials!

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about starting a blog?

Starting a blog can be intimidating, and it can be hard to put yourself out there, but I think you should just go for it! I’m on the shy side so was nervous about sharing my writing and photography with people but I don’t regret it for a second. If anything, it’s pushed me to become better at what I’m interested in.

What type of gear/tools do you use for creating your blog posts?

For photos, I use both a Canon DSLR and a Samsung NX2000 compact DSLR and I edit with Lightroom. A tripod is also important! For food photography, it’s important to have a range of surfaces and props. I use marble, wood, and cloth and I have a variety of linens, plates, and bowls. I’m always hunting for new things. Flea markets are your friend!
